35. Check the basement for sloppy self-employment

Most modern houses are built with completed basements. They are professionally done and have everything built into code. But then some basements are unfinished, and the previous owner of the house decided to save money by doing it himself. This can lead to foundation problems, leaks, etc.

So how can you tell if the owner did the basement? The angles are often different, or the drywall may be uneven. The windows can have standard metal frames in construction. A professional builder will replace it with a more excellent vinyl window. If you can say that this is a do-it-yourself project, you may have to have a building inspector come in to make sure the basement is correct, and that could force you to rent—bid to fix all the problems.
