Poinsettias may cause problems during the holidays.

7. Poinsettias may cause problems during the holidays.

Poinsettias are popular Christmas decorations, but they should be kept out of reach of children. If consumed, they can cause minor poisoning in cats and dogs. When swallowed, minor symptoms such as vomiting, drooling, and, in rare cases, diarrhea may occur. If the milky sap comes into contact with the skin, it can irritate (redness, swelling, and itching). Eye exposure can cause minor discomfort in some people. Unless the symptoms are severe and persistent, they are usually self-limiting and do not necessitate medical attention. Poisoning from poinsettias has no antidote.

Medical treatment is rarely required unless clinical indications are severe because of the low toxicity reported with poinsettia intake. Vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea are some of the symptoms of poinsettia poisoning. It is better to be safe than sorry, so keep an eye on your decorations and keep your dog out of reach throughout the holidays. Call for a follow-up appointment if you think it might need to visit a veterinarian.
