If you want a few chives in your potato soup, go ahead, but do not let your dog lick the spoon. Chives are members of the same Allium family as onion, garlic, and leeks. For dogs, some foods can be dangerous. Chives eating can harm your dog’s red blood cells, resulting in anemia over time. Organosulfoxides, a chemical that causes havoc in their system, are present in the diets. Some dogs may not show any signs of poisoning, and deadly poisonings have occurred in the past.

The Allium family includes onions, garlic, chives, and leeks, which are deadly to dogs and cats in the correct dose (if they eat a single large serving or repeatedly nibble on small amounts over time). Garlic is thought to be five times as harmful to cats and dogs as onions.
