The Enigma of Hetaeras

In ancient Greece, women generally held a lower social status than men, but there were exceptions. These exceptions were the hetaeras.

Hetaeras were high-profile courtesans who also engaged in intellectual pursuits. Unlike the portal, another category of escorts in ancient Greece, hetaeras had a select few wealthy lovers. A woman had to undergo specialized education from a young age to become a hetaera.
