Her Father Suddenly Became King

In 1685, Anne’s life took a dramatic turn when her uncle, King Charles II, succumbed to an apoplectic fit, thrusting Anne’s father onto the throne. This transition, however, was met with discontent among the people of England. King James’s conversion to Catholicism stirred discomfort among Anglicans, exacerbated by his appointment of fellow Catholics to crucial positions within the government.

Anne found herself caught in the crosscurrents of political tension as her relationship with her father strained, reaching its climax when he attempted to impose Catholicism on her and her children.
