Nichelle Nichols – Then
Nichelle Nichols, a talented African-American actress, made her mark as Uhura in Star Trek. She portrayed an easy-going individual on the show who often found herself on the fence regarding decision-making. Her character served as a communications officer, and her presence was historically significant. Even when Nichelle Nichols contemplated leaving the show, a pivotal moment occurred when none other than Martin Luther King Jr. persuaded her to stay.
Recognizing the importance of her role, Dr. King believed it was necessary to keep her character on the screen. Over time, Uhura evolved within the Star Trek universe, eventually becoming a Starfleet commander and breaking new ground as the first Black character on any T.V. show with such a position of power.
