6. Similar to his father, but not quite a sibling.

Let’s come to see another manifestation of hoarding disorder! “My Dad is a hoarder,” writes Reddit user bake-kujira. He and I are both record collectors. His fascination, on the other hand, is out of control. His home is brimming with memorabilia and collectibles. Most of it is fascinating, and some of it might even be useful. It’s just that there’s so much of it. In his home, there are marked walkways. What’s odd is how well-organized everything is. I’ve worked on overcoming my hoarding tendencies for fear of being like him over the last few years. But I think I’ve got a good handle on it. I have regular purges where I sell, donate, and trash items that I no longer need or want. I take solace in the fact that the purging is a welcome relief. Also, I dread my father’s day passes away, mainly because his mountain of belongings becomes mine and my two brothers’ responsibility.

Thankfully, he was able to self-correct his habits and impulses, and the cycle came to an end at him. It’s healthy to let go of things that no longer bring you joy or serve you. It’s a satisfying feeling when something you once loved brings joy to someone else. Knowing that he will have to go through all of his father’s possessions one day is terrifying. Thankfully, all is in order, and the prospect of selling sets and collectibles remains viable.
