25. Hoarding isn’t just a symptom of OCD.
“My grandma hoards prescription drugs that do not belong to her,” writes Reddit user HotelRoom5172648B. She’s been collecting for more than 15 years and has no idea who 90% of these people are.” After 15 years of collecting, her grandmother’s collection of bottles must be staggering. It may be a symptom of dementia if she doesn’t know who they belong to. Dementia is not unusual in people who also have hoarding problems. Unfortunately, it is a chronic condition of varying degrees of severity.
Dementia always begins with basic forgetfulness, such as losing track of where you left something. And you may start losing more names and locations, and you will get lost. Memory failure is more noticeable, and their problem-solving abilities deteriorate. Mood swings and rage are common in the later stages of the disease. Someone with dementia can eventually find it challenging to care for themselves, necessitating round-the-clock supervision. Unfortunately, dementia manifests itself differently in each individual, making it difficult to predict how rapidly things can progress and what exactly a person will need.
