Boundaries of the Personal

Respecting personal space and privacy is of paramount importance in Sweden. In Sweden, enquiring about someone’s family or work, which may be considered an expression of interest in other cultures, is deemed impolite. Swedes prefer keeping their personal lives shielded.

The concept of oversharing, or “TMI” (Too Much Information), isn’t part of the Swedish equation. They keep things uncomplicated and reserve detailed sharing for close friends. In Sweden, a stranger doesn’t need to unravel your life story after a single encounter. They value brevity.
