Indulgent Saturday Sweets

The weekend rolls around, and the urge to unwind and relish in a sweet indulgence is irresistible. Fear not, for Sweden has you covered – Saturdays mark the occasion for enjoying delectable treats known as “lördagsgodis.”

On average, a family of two parents and two children consumes about 1.2 kilos of candy per week. This might seem substantial for a health-conscious nation, but it all comes down to “lagom” – a sense of balance. This Saturday tradition traces its roots to the 1940s and 50s when Vipeholm Mental Hospital in Lund provided sweets to patients for research purposes on dental decay. Somehow, this practice entered the heart of Swedish sweet culture.
