Friluftsliv: Open-Air Living

Swedes have a term, pronounced “free-lofts-liv,” which translates to “open-air living.” This concept gained popularity in the 1850s thanks to the Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen. The idea is to spend time in remote places to rejuvenate one’s spiritual well-being.

The significance of spending time outdoors is so pronounced that certain companies have incorporated it into their work week, with employees engaging in outdoor activities during their lunch breaks. With more than half the population having access to summer houses and the freedom to roam under the allemansrätten law, Swedes truly make the most of their leisure time.
