Regulated Drinking

Sweden has had strict regulations on alcohol consumption since the 1920s prohibition era. If you wish to purchase alcohol outside a bar or restaurant, you can only do so from state-owned off-licenses called Systembolaget, often adorned with anti-drinking posters. You need to be at least 20 years old to purchase alcohol, while in bars or restaurants, it’s 18. Alcohol taxation is determined by its alcohol content.

Unlike in the US, alcohol is unavailable at supermarkets in Sweden, with no discounts or bulk buying options. During the last 15 years, these rules have contributed to a decrease in alcohol consumption within the nation.
