Pocahontas’ Sidekick Was Almost a Turkey

Unsurprisingly, animators would consider putting a turkey in the 1995 animated film Pocahontas. Turkeys are commonly found in the Virginia area where the movie is supposed to have taken place. Initially, a turkey named Redfeather was the sidekick of the Native American princess.

Meeko proved a great fit due to his skill and hilarious interactions with Governor Ratcliffe’s pug. This change in the sidekick character demonstrates Disney’s animation team’s creative adaptability and ability to integrate new elements into a film’s story seamlessly. Meeko added humor and depth to Pocahontas’ journey, highlighting Disney’s commitment to crafting well-rounded and entertaining characters in their animated classics.
