Sharks vs. Mermaids
Using “sharks and mermaids” as gender-distinguishing criteria in a restroom sign is problematic. While both are aquatic themes, mermaids are mythical, and sharks are real creatures. Using “sharks” could be interpreted as associating aggression with males, a problematic stereotype.
Additionally, the sign overlooks that sharks, like all creatures, have both males and females. This design is confusing and reinforces gender stereotypes.
