17. Bearded Iris
The iris is often used as a highlight in floral design, but the bearded iris is unique. One of the unique features is that although they look like they have six petals, they only have three. The leaves are at the top, while the three at the bottom are called the large sepals. A more subtle feature is that they have a translucent appendage located above the falls or below the “petal.”
These come in several colors, with red, blue, white, and yellow being the most common. There are different variations of Irises found all over North America, especially in coastal regions.
