11. Replace Windows
Buying windows is expensive, even without installation fees. Take a walk through Home Depot or Lowes, and you’ll find that it costs a few hundred dollars for just one window. This is why so many people decide to try installing windows as one of their first DIY jobs, especially if they find a good deal from Craigslist or the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Unfortunately, this job is much harder than you can imagine. And if it is not done correctly, it can lead to drafts, leaks, and potentially a significant mold problem.
If you’ve recently bought an older window home and can now afford an expert to replace them, then do not risk replacing them by yourself. This can lead to a much more expensive problem. Not sure how to pass the winter with single windows? Consider covering them with plastic sheets in the winter, and hire an expert as soon as you can afford to do it properly. You can buy a window insulator at your local hardware store or online.
