Harry Belafonte: 96 Years Old

Harry Belafonte, the Jamaican-American singer, actor, and social activist, passed away at 96. Born on March 1, 1927, Belafonte was widely known for popularizing Caribbean music and calypso in the 1950s, including hits like “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” and “Jump in the Line.” He also contributed significantly to films and television, notably appearing in the landmark miniseries Roots.

Beyond his entertainment career, Belafonte was a prominent advocate for social justice and civil rights. He worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr., played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement, and was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 1994, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
