Monopoly’s Fate in Cuba
Monopoly enjoyed a significant following in Cuba until Castro outlawed it, ordering the destruction of all sets. In this communist nation, owning a Monopoly set could lead to more than just a spirited family dispute.
Fidel Castro initiated eradicating the game at the dawn of his regime. Before 1959, Monopoly had a substantial fan base in Cuba, with local printers even producing a bootleg version known as “Capitolio,” openly sidestepping Parker Brothers’ copyright.
