Hitchhiking: A Common Practice

In Cuba, hitchhiking is considered the standard mode of transportation. Government vehicles must offer rides to hitchhikers when passenger space is available. Due to the country’s scarcity of cars, hitchhiking is encouraged and organized, with designated areas for hitchhikers. Drivers pick up riders in a first-come, first-served fashion.

The necessity for hitchhiking arose after the collapse of the Soviet Union when alternative transportation became essential.
