Never Go Into a Place With a Dripping Umbrella

In Japan, where the weather can be unpredictable, it’s common for people to carry umbrellas, especially during the rainy season. However, a significant cultural practice is never to enter an establishment with a dripping umbrella. This action is considered impolite.

To address this, special umbrella boxes are often provided outside venues for individuals to deposit their dripping umbrellas. Interestingly, these boxes have a high level of trust associated with them, as umbrellas left in these boxes are rarely stolen. In cases where an umbrella is mistakenly taken by someone else, it is often returned to the same box the following day.
