Tipping is considered rude

In Japan, tipping can be considered not only rude, but also degrading. Japanese culture is deeply rooted in dignity, respect and hard work. It is therefore not uncommon to see someone chasing another person just to return a tip that was given to them.

The question also arises: what if a person has been very helpful or provided service that exceeded expectations to the point where you feel obligated to tip? Instead of tipping someone who has been a big help, it’s more acceptable to give a small gift.
