How to serve the drink

In many Western cultures, it is common for people to serve other people’s drinks before serving themselves at a dinner party. However, in Japan, this practice is considered impolite.

Japanese custom is for each person to fill each other’s cups except their own, then have another person do the same for you. Everyone has to wait for someone to say “kanpai,” which means health, before they can drink. This way of serving drinks reflects the importance of courtesy and respect in Japanese culture.
