Bow as a sign of respect

The custom of bowing is widely known in Japan, but what not everyone knows is that there are different types of bows for different categories of people. Bowing the wrong way can be considered disrespectful. 

For example, in informal situations or when meeting friends, a quick, small arc of 15 degrees is enough. However, in formal contexts, such as greeting a superior at work, anything other than a slow 30-degree salute can be perceived as disrespectful.
