Avoid physical contact
Unlike other cultures where physical touching is common, in Japan this type of contact is avoided, even between close friends and family members.
Physical contact between strangers is particularly forbidden in the Japanese way of life. Instead of touch, verbal communication is preferred and considered more appropriate in Japanese society.
