The Importance of Being Ernest

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. His father, Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, was a physician, and his mother, Grace Hall Hemingway, was a well-known local musician and cello player.

After their marriage in 1896, Clarence and Grace Hemingway moved in with Grace’s father, Ernest Hall, and named their first son after him. Ernest Hemingway, the second of six children, followed his sister Marcelline, born in 1898. His siblings Ursula arrived in 1902, Madelaine in 1904, Carol in 1911, and Leicester in 1915.
