Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

In 1922, Hemingway’s wife, Hadley, learned firsthand why you should never put your eggs in one basket, or in this case, your husband’s writing. Hemingway was still working as a journalist and was on assignment in Switzerland. He asked Hadley to join him, and to surprise him, she packed all of his stories, typescripts, and carbons in a single suitcase. And you just know what’s going to happen next…

Hadley left the suitcase unattended at Gare de Lyon station. When she rushed back, it was gone. All but two of her husband’s stories were in the suitcase — one he’d already sent to an editor and one he’d locked in a drawer after Gertrude Stein disliked it! Distraught, he almost gave up writing, but one of his friends convinced him to keep going.
