Deal With Him!
As well as hanging out with American poet Ezra Pound, writer and art collector Gertrude Stein, and Pablo Picasso in Paris, Hemingway also drank with Irish novelist James Joyce. The two writers couldn’t have been more different: Joyce was physically weak and unattractive, while Hemingway was known for his exuberant macho ways and boxing skills.
Therefore, whenever he was with Hemingway, the Irishman would pick drunken bar fights before hiding behind Hemingway’s stocky body and shouting, “Deal with him, Hemingway! Deal with him!” in a thick Irish brogue. Hemingway was more than happy to accommodate, and fists often flew!
