In the winter of 1928, Hemingway received a cable telling him that his father had killed himself. He was devastated. Legend says Ernest had written to his father telling him not to worry about financial difficulties, and the letter allegedly arrived minutes after the suicide. Prophetically, Ernest remarked, “I’ll probably go the same way.”
