World War II
Having participated in the Spanish Civil War, Hemingway was in Europe from May 1944 to March 1945. Wearing a large bandage on his head, he took part in the D-Day Landings but was considered “precious cargo” and not allowed ashore.
When he arrived in London, he met Time Magazine correspondent Mary Welsh, and once again, Papa became infatuated. He asked Mary Welsh to marry him on their third meeting. Give him one thing. He didn’t beat around the bush, did he? Meanwhile, his wife Martha had been forced to cross the Atlantic in a ship filled with explosives because Hemingway refused to help her get a press pass on a plane. Arriving in London, she accused him of being a bully and told him their relationship was “through, absolutely finished.” Their divorce was finalized later that year.
