Das Boot
Mixing his bravery, foolhardiness, and love of the sea during World War II, Hemingway used his fishing boat to hunt for German U-boats that had entered Caribbean waters. He equipped the Pilar with high-frequency direction-finding equipment and kept his trusty Thompson submachine gun and hand grenades on board to use in case he spotted any German U-boats. Not that this would have had any effect on a Nazi submarine.
Hemingway figured that if he did spot a U-boat, the Navy wouldn’t be able to get there fast enough to destroy it, so he devised a simple solution – attack and run. Luckily, the author never ran into the German Navy’s might to see whether the plan would have worked! Clue: It wouldn’t have worked. It’s quite delusional!
