The Original Standing Desk
Though it’s common practice today, especially amongst hipster writers in co-working spaces, unlike most other writers of his day, Hemingway preferred to work standing up, often spending hours and hours at a time on his feet. He did most of his writing in his bedroom with his typewriter sitting on top of a bookcase that he called his “work desk.”
He’d stand over his work desk for hours at a time while he wrote. On a good day, he would wear down seven pencils and only move to shift his weight from one leg to the other. Hard on the feet, but good for productivity!
