Shot Again

Being blown up in the First World War and shot at in the Spanish Civil War and World War II wasn’t enough adventure for Hemingway. While trying to spear a shark on a fishing trip in Key West, he managed to shoot himself in both calves!

Prompted by this experience, he wrote “On Being Shot Again” for Esquire Magazine, offering advice on killing large animals: “Shoot it in the brain if it’s close, the heart if it’s far, or the spine if you need to stop it instantly.” During his 1954 hunting trip to Africa, Hemingway hunted almost every animal despite severe illness and hospitalization, returning home with multiple trophies.
