The Feds
It’s no secret that Hemingway didn’t much care for the FBI, and he was an outspoken critic of the agency, calling the bureau “The Gestapo.” He felt that their activities were dangerous and “anti-liberal.” J. Edgar Hoover didn’t like Hemingway either, mostly because of his criticism of the FBI and politics.
In the 1950s, as Hemingway’s drinking increased and his health and mental health deteriorated, he became more and more paranoid. He was always worried about money and taxes and would never return to Cuba to retrieve the manuscripts he left in a bank vault. He started thinking the FBI was actively monitoring his movements in Idaho.
