Complicated Moves & VFX
While Margot Robbie trained extensively to perform some of the skating in “I, Tonya,” there were complex moves that required years of practice to execute properly. To ensure the skating sequences looked authentic, professional figure skaters were brought in to perform those challenging maneuvers on set.
The movie’s remarkable visual effects (VFX) team played a crucial role in creating the illusion that Margot executed all the skating maneuvers herself. Using a blue screen to film Margot as she mimicked the motions of the professional skaters, they later replaced the skater’s face with Margot’s during the post-production process. This seamless blending of Margot’s performance and the expert skaters’ skills made it appear that Margot herself executed the intricate and demanding skating moves, contributing to the film’s immersive and believable portrayal of Tonya Harding’s life and career.
