Losing Her Sanity
Shortly after filming “The Misfits,” Marilyn experienced the tragic death of her co-worker Clark Gable. Gable’s widow blamed Marilyn for his passing, triggering a deep spiral into self-pity and self-loathing.
To regain her emotional balance, Marilyn checked into a hospital seeking rest. However, she accidentally ended up in a ward for seriously disturbed patients. Marilyn contacted him since only Joe DiMaggio had the authority to sign for her release. The hospital ultimately released her after Joe threatened sternly, vowing to dismantle the hospital “brick by brick” if they refused to let her go.
