Though he was the first of her three husbands, few know how profoundly he impacted Marilyn’s life, as their union occurred when she was only 15. James candidly stated after their brief marriage ended, “I never knew Marilyn Monroe, and I make no claims to understand her to this day. I knew and loved Norma Jean.”
