9. Apothecary Cabinets

Pharmacists retained a number of their ingredients in the old days to produce drugs in apothecary cabinets. There were an extensive collection of tiny drawers labeled for each chemical. (After all, The Chemist” is called a pharmacist in England because that’s exactly what they are!) Apothecary cabinets were made of real wood and were designed to last a lifetime.

Flash forward to today, and pharmacists from pharmaceutical firms are having pre-made pills delivered. Instead of wooden drawers, they are mostly sorted into little plastic bins. These cabinets were taken out of old pharmacies and brought into the homes of citizens. It is sporadic to find a genuine antique apothecary cabinet, given that they were designed only for a town pharmacy. Smaller ones will go for a few hundred dollars, and larger ones typically cost about $2,000 to $3,000, as in the pictures above.
