We’re used to thinking of billionaires as distant figures whose decisions don’t directly impact ordinary lives. But occasionally, one decision can dramatically change someone’s future.

Steve Jobs once gave a secretary at Apple a substantial amount of stock after she arrived late to work because her car wouldn’t start. Instead of scolding her, he helped ensure that she’d never have that problem again. Whether he did it out of generosity, impulse, or showmanship, the gesture reportedly left her far better off financially than any salary raise ever could.
