Rooney Mara in “Pan”
Though Rooney Mara’s role as Tiger Lily in Pan—the 2015 reimagining of the classic Peter Pan story—made her a star, she has since spoken publicly about the deep regret she feels overtaking the character. The casting of Mara as Tiger Lily, a character traditionally portrayed as a Native American princess in all versions of the story, faced widespread criticism for whitewashing.
“I can understand why people were upset and frustrated,” she admitted to the Telegraph. She said: “I really hate, hate, hate that I am on that side of the whitewashing conversation. I really do. I don’t ever want to be on that side of it again.”
