Helen Mirren in “Caligula”

Helen Mirren, an Academy Award winner, has earned widespread recognition for her distinguished and sophisticated portrayals in high-quality dramas, notably in 2006’s “The Queen” and 2001’s “Gosford Park.” But way back in 1979, she made one of her first films with a very different kind of royal role in her breakout movie Caligula, now infamous as one of the raunchiest Roman epics in Hollywood history.

Mirren has referred to the movie as “an irresistible mix of art and genitals,” later going on to explain, “I was pretty young when I made that … It was like being sent down to Dante’s Inferno in many ways.”
