Losing Her Mind
Shortly after completing the filming of “The Misfits,” Marilyn faced the tragic loss of her co-star, Clark Gable. Clark’s widow blamed Marilyn for his death, pushing her into a profound abyss of self-pity and self-loathing. In an attempt to regain her emotional stability, Marilyn checked herself into a hospital for much-needed rest.
However, a mix-up led her to be placed in a ward for seriously disturbed patients. It was only through the intervention of her ex-husband, Joe DiMaggio, who threatened to dismantle the hospital “brick by brick,” that she was released from the inappropriate ward and began her journey toward healing.
